GTA 6 PS5 vs Xbox: Is the 8-to-1 Pre-Order Gap Real?

An analyst pegs AAA single-player launches at 75–80% on PS5, and GTA 6 pre-orders reportedly skew 8-to-1 to Sony — but the figure is unofficial and Xbox disputes it.

Is GTA 6 really selling eight times better on PS5 than on Xbox? Officially, no — but the trend behind that claim is real. Industry analyst Christopher Dring says AAA single-player games now take roughly 75–80% of their launch-month console sales on PS5, and an early estimate pegged GTA 6 pre-orders at 8-to-1 in Sony's favour. The catch: that 8-to-1 number is disputed, unofficial, and Xbox has pushed back hard. GTA 6 — Rockstar's Vice City crime saga starring Jason and Lucia — doesn't even launch until November 19, 2026, so no real sales data exists yet.

Why PS5 Dominates AAA Single-Player Launches

Speaking to VGC, The Game Business editor Christopher Dring put hard numbers on something players have sensed for years. For big single-player releases like Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert or 007 First Light, he says, "you're seeing about 75–80% of their sales coming on PlayStation during the launch month" once PC is removed. The reasons aren't mysterious: PS5 has shipped just under 93 million units, while one rumour pegs Xbox Series X|S at under 30 million. Sony has also spent two console generations building its brand on exactly this kind of story-driven single-player game — which is precisely what GTA 6 is. Sony has leaned so hard into the PS5 that it even gave the game a custom PS5 welcome screen.

Is GTA 6 Really Outselling Xbox 8-to-1 on PS5?

There's no confirmed answer yet. The 8-to-1 figure came from IGN affiliate-link data, not official sales — and Xbox responded that it "doesn't represent pre-order data," reporting "record orders" of its own. Even Dring thinks the real split is "unlikely to be as extreme" as eight to one. Rockstar hasn't released any GTA 6 pre-order numbers.

Why Xbox Isn't Actually in Trouble

A lopsided percentage still hides huge raw numbers. As Dring notes, "30% of a multi-million-selling game is a lot of games" — and GTA 6 will sell in the tens of millions. Xbox also has levers PlayStation lacks: Game Pass, day-one releases on PC and other platforms, and a player base that leans toward multiplayer. "An online shooter often does very well on Xbox," Dring adds, "when factoring in the install base." For a single-player juggernaut like GTA 6, though, the PlayStation tilt is expected.

What This Means For Players

For now, treat any precise PS5-vs-Xbox split as an estimate, not a scoreboard. The trend is real — GTA 6 will almost certainly sell more on PS5 — but the headline 8-to-1 number is an unofficial extrapolation that even the analyst behind the wider claim won't fully endorse. The only figures that will settle it are official launch sales, and those won't exist until well after November 19, 2026. Until then, buy GTA 6 on whichever console you already own; both versions arrive on the same day.

Is the 8-to-1 GTA 6 pre-order split official?

No. It came from IGN affiliate-link data, not Rockstar or Sony. Xbox says it "doesn't represent pre-order data," and the analyst behind the wider claim calls eight-to-one "unlikely to be as extreme."

How much of AAA single-player sales go to PS5?

Analyst Christopher Dring estimates about 75–80% of launch-month console sales for big single-player games land on PS5, once PC sales are excluded.

Will GTA 6 sell more on PS5 or Xbox?

Almost certainly PS5, given its much larger install base and single-player audience — but no official GTA 6 sales data exists yet, since the game launches November 19, 2026.
