GTA 6 Developers Seek Union Recognition at Rockstar
GTA 6 developers have asked Rockstar to recognize their IWGB union over pay, crunch and flexible working — and may take the fight to the UK government.

GTA 6 developers at Rockstar Games have formally asked the studio to recognize their union — the IWGB Game Workers Union — opening a path to collective bargaining over pay transparency, crunch and flexible working. If Rockstar refuses, the union says it is prepared to take the fight to the UK government for statutory recognition. The request, reported by IGN, would make Rockstar only the second UK games studio with a recognized union.
Are GTA 6 developers unionizing?
Yes. Staff at Grand Theft Auto VI maker Rockstar Games have applied for voluntary recognition of their IWGB-affiliated Rockstar Game Workers Union. The union says it now represents a large share of Rockstar's UK workforce across its Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds and London offices, and wants a formal seat at the table with management.
What does the Rockstar union want?
Its stated goals are pay transparency, fairer crunch (excessive overtime) practices and better flexible-working arrangements. The IWGB has asked for voluntary recognition and says Rockstar has 10 working days to respond. If the studio declines, the union can apply for statutory recognition through the Department for Business and Trade's Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) — the formal UK government route. Union president Alex Marshall argued that with GTA 6 preorders reportedly generating $3 billion, "Rockstar bosses can easily afford to sit around the table" with the people who make the games. In its own statement, Rockstar said it values "an open and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders" and will arrange to meet.
Why is the GTA 6 union push controversial?
It follows a bitter dispute. Late last year Rockstar dismissed 34 staff (31 in the UK, three in Canada). The IWGB calls the firings union-busting and is challenging them at a Glasgow employment tribunal. Rockstar strenuously denies that, saying the workers were dismissed for gross misconduct after sharing confidential details about unannounced projects in a Discord group — not for organizing. A January application for interim relief was rejected, and a final hearing is set for September 2026 to decide whether the dismissals were unlawful. These remain contested claims, not settled findings.
Could GTA 6 developers go on strike?
Possibly. The IWGB told reporters its members "will decide on the organising strategy they use to secure" recognition, and a strike is reportedly on the table if Rockstar ignores the voluntary route. For now, Rockstar has only agreed to meet — it has not agreed to recognize the union.
What This Means For Players
This is a workplace story, not a content one: GTA 6 is still set to launch on November 19, 2026, and nothing here changes the game itself. But how Rockstar responds could shape how the wider industry treats the developers behind its biggest games, and an unresolved labor dispute at the studio is worth watching as launch nears. Rockstar has not agreed to recognition, and the tribunal over last year's firings is still pending.
So should Rockstar voluntarily recognize the union before GTA 6 ships? Tell us below.
Is the GTA 6 developers' union officially recognized?
Not yet. Workers have requested voluntary recognition; Rockstar has acknowledged the request and says it will meet, but has not agreed to recognize the union.
Why were Rockstar developers fired last year?
The union says 31 UK staff were dismissed for union activity, which Rockstar denies — the studio says they were fired for leaking confidential information. A tribunal will decide in September 2026.
Which union are GTA 6 developers joining?
The Rockstar Game Workers Union, a branch of the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB).
